When Did You Feel Grown Up?

When does the time come when we wake up one day and feel like an adult..

I remember living at home and I used to pretty much live within the four walls of my bedroom. My mum used to call me horizontal Hetti as I was always lying down watching TV in bed. I would never get up and do anything unless I was going out because I had too.

I thought maybe once I left college, left home and started working full time I would feel grown up. But it doesn’t feel like it’s got to that point yet.

I still have mood swings and can throw tantrums and sometimes I just want to build a den and hide there instead of going to work.

But some people never feel grown up. I guess the responsibilities of having kids or getting married can make a big difference but who knows?

I know many people in there 40’s/50’s plus who are much more immature than I am, and act like massive kids. And it’s great! They are just being themselves and aren’t worried about fitting in with society’s expectations of behaviour.

I still feel very young but that can change depending on who I am with at the time.

I wonder if we ever feel ‘grown up’..

Having a mortgage did it for me. Nothing like that feeling of being trapped — and your boss knowing that you’re trapped — for making you feel grown up and consequently subtracting years from your life!

Though I’m far from being a grown up, I feel that forthcoming exams – which’ll dictate much of my future livelihood – have really snapped things into perspective.

I think we need to preserve the child within us and show it in front of our loved ones, but refrain from exposing it to society as they’ll misunderstand most of the time.
    Nice pic BTW. 🙂

I’m definitely with WGR56 up there. Last year, I bought my house, got a lovely mortgage along with a shit ton of bills. The past year was intense. It was hard to even find that happy place where it was just no stress. Its all about finding that balance and remembering things will go well with positive thinking and a whole lot of animated flicks and rom-coms. The child within always wins in the end 🙂
    Great post!

I think I started to feel “grown up” last week… I am studying for the GRE to go back to graduate school – and I realized, while studying, that a year ago I would not have been willing to put effort into doing all of the things I need to do in order to get to where I want to be in life. I think that “grown up” is state of mind and is different for everyone. I feel that I’m becoming an adult (slowly but surely) because I am putting emphasis on the important things in life that matter to me and will help me; budgeting, taking care of my health and being proactive in my education. I might not be a “grown up” but I am becoming more mature with my decisions, which is what being an adult is about, at least to me.

Side note – I really enjoy how relateable your posts are!

I remember feeling grown up once for a fleeting moment when I paid a bill. However, most of the time I do not feel grown up at all. I feel old when I hear my favorite music on the Classic Rock station, but not grown up.

I felt like an adult the day I turned twenty five.. That was crossing the threshold from childhood to full blown adult to me (even though I’d been out on my own for eight years at that point). Although, I will say though that I’m the most childlike person I know, in that I get excited and goofy and playful pretty often. I’m also infinitely curious. In a way I think your childlike nature is still a part of you even when you’re an adult.

I was 29 when I told my parents I wouldnt be living with them anymore. I think that is the day my life changed, i was an adult, I was engaged and moving to another country. It was crazy but I was happy : )
